Prestwich Hospital was built as an asylum at Prestwich in 1851, as the second Lancashire County Lunatic Asylum. By 1900 it had grown into the largest asylum in Europe.The National Asylum Workers' Union organised a strike of 200 employees at the hospital in 1918.It is now run by Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.
